Welcome to Westerwoude! Since 2080, this community in the West of the Netherlands has lived in harmony
with
nature and the water. Life moves at a slower pace here and relies entirely on the local economy. Over
time, however, the residents have become increasingly self-reliant; the national government is no longer
appreciated here.
As an inspector from the East, you face a significant challenge. Will you succeed in carrying out your
duties carefully and winning the trust of the population?
This game was developed in a group of 5 students for Planbureau voor de leefomgeving (PBL). The game explores a future scenario where the Netherlands grow together with nature and rising sea levels, by living on top of mounds that form small island communities.
This game was developed using the Unity game engine.
Art direction was my main role during this project. Visually, I wanted to go for a similar style as Half-Life and other early 2000's 'realistic' graphics, because they provide the right uncanny feeling fitting for a story where the main character needs to learn how to get around in an environment that feels foreign and is normally alienated from him.
Gameplay wise, I wanted a day-by-day gameplay loop with heavy emphasis on NPC interaction and conversation. The game features two different endings, determined by how well the player talks to NPC's and earn their trust.
